Vegan Seitan Steak

 

It is extremely versatile in the kitchen. Seitan is especially useful for those who, for whatever reason, cannot eat soy protein. But because it is made from wheat gluten, it would not be appropriate for anyone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Unfortunately this recipe is not gluten-free and I do not have a substitute for the vital wheat gluten. And the latest trend will have vegans rushing to their kitchens to make seitan. I like to wrap my seitan in aluminum foil and place in an air-tight container for about 10 days. Seitan will dry out over time, and I find wrapping it in foil helps preserve some of the moisture. For this recipe, you should knead for about 8 minutes.

Adding flavor to the seitan is the key. 1 onion chopped / 1 tomato chopped / 1/2 green pepper chopped. None of the seasonings in this recipe would prevent you from being able to take it in different directions, like Asian, Italian, or Mexican dishes.
